Librarians in Africa do so much in promoting information/digital literacy, knowledge management and addressing societal issues like education inequality and information access, yet their relevance seem to not be well represented due to the stereotype of them as passive book keepers. This underrepresentation of librarians in Africa is a serious problem and it makes many people see libraries as just book storage facilities rather than centers of learning, creativity and community development.
The Librarian Spotlight Africa (LSA) seeks to address these issues by shining a spotlight on the exemplary contributions of African librarians providing them a platform to share their experiences to not only inspire the next generation, but also to shape the future of libraries throughout Africa
To establish a unified platform that amplifies the impact of outstanding librarians and information professionals across Africa for their exemplary contributions to the Library and Information Science Field, inspiring innovation and transforming the perception of librarianship globally.
The programme is open to librarians, archivists, information scientists and professionals actively engaged in promoting knowledge, literacy, and access to information across Africa. Nominations for the Librarian of the Month come from three key sources: members of the library community, self-nominations, and the Evaluation Committee, who play a major role in the final selection process. Successful nominees are contacted via email.
LSA is a movement to redefine the role of librarians in global development. Beyond recognition we facilitate other initiatives such as:
The Google My Library campaign is one of the projects of LSA aimed at empowering libraries in Nigeria, and potentially Africa, to become more visible and accessible through Google Business Profile Listings.
While we believe our work is making meaningful strides in transforming professional practices, community perception, and engagement, the full impact of the LSA programme is still being evaluated.
We invite you to be a part of our impact assessment by participating in this survey. Your insights will help us: Click here to Provide Feedback/Review for LSA!
